Replicant feels much smaller and less varied in its world/structure, and while Automata is by no means huge, you almost see everything Nier has to offer by hour 3 or 4 in terms of locations. I am intrigued more by the questions posed in Automata, particularly around purpose being tied to labor on behalf of people you don't actually know, but the storytelling just didn't quite work as well for me the way it did in Replicant.Īutomata. When that's your main character, I think that's a bit of an issue. The voice actor trying to sound emotionless as 2B didn't come across the way I think it was intended. You have more varying character types, they all have much more defined personalities and motivations, and I think the voice performances really help sell the characters in a way that I just didn't really buy as much in Automata. Outside of that, I just prefer the characters in Replicant. The original releases of Gestalt and Replicant were pretty bare bones in its combat, but the new version bridges the gap between them to where there's practically no gap at all. Their Transformers game is a more skill-based action game than Automata is. For a Platinum game, it's pretty bare bones. I'm a bit surprised people think the gameplay of Automata is so much better than Replicant. Good thing her character was not completely rewritten, so I still recommend getting Automata dubbed if that's your preference.I definitely prefer Replicant (and Gestalt) more than Automata even though I played Automata first. Zero and half of the cast are completely different characters altogether.ĮN 2B and JP 2B are still the same characters in the end, they just sound a bit different. Now, english Drakengard 3 characters are different from japanese. Anyway, Nier Gestalt is not badly done and I still recommend it a f*cking lot. at least for me they are completely different exchanges, and there's other moments like that. In the english version, when Emil's cheerfully explaining the camping adventures, Kaine interrupts with "Damn Emil, shut up, I got a reputation to mantain!". One particular scene I'll never forget is when Kaine and Emil were banished from Nier's village, Emil comments how he loves camping with Kaine, and she ends the subject with "That's how it is, so don't bother with that" (JP) (Nier trying to convince the villagers to accept them). It's not to say the dub is bad, no way, it's actually pretty decent but the localization team doesn't seem to get these types of female characters: Other example is Kaine from Nier, who is supposed to be an edgy, brash woman indeed, but she's sounds way more soft when time calls. Japanese 2B sounds more calm, but when she's unsure of herself her voice cracks a bit, meanwhile in the english version her tone is more firm and composed. I noticed it, and sadly I noticed that with all Taroverse games I've played in english as well. There's a big difference between sulky got told off by robot mom and cheeky little shit.Ĩ-4 mis-characterised Zero in Drakengard 3 quite drastically too though so it's nothing new. It shows that he plays around with the rules and even when told off, he's going to still push the rules as far as he can without actually breaking them. " vs "Hai, hai " "Haiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii ". "Yeah, yeah" "One affirmation will suffice" "Fine. How can 2B help with that when internally, she's as fucked up and helpless about that?Īnother example would be 9S's playful responses to 21O, which miss the point in English again. Like with your spoilered example, it makes sense. It creates a striking contrast when she goes from sounding defeated and resigned to her duty to fighting for what she believes in, when she can't hold it in and has to let it out. In Japanese, she's resigned to keeping her wants and desires buried within herself because she's not allowed to express them. She always sounds upset, blunt and/or crabby. Rather, the inflection and tone of voice in English doesn't do an especially good job at showing the conflict within 2B as a whole. The Japanese voice acting is just better all around and Ishikawa Yui particularly strikes the character much more successfully.ĭon't take this as a knock against Kira Buckland, it's a localisation and direction choice rather than hers and voice actors aren't generally in a position to object too harshly, there are plenty who will say "sir, yes, sir, how high sir" so she's going to be replaceable.
